Lalleshwari

In 2018, Verstegen visited India. What struck him there was the disorder, the chaos – and the strength of the women he saw in the fields, who, with common sense and optimism, brought about something productive there. The women carry the whole of society there, walking, so to speak, in immaculate white clothes in the middle of the dirt. The intense colors of the clothing and the beautiful fabrics also inspired Verstegen for his use of color. Verstegen again recognized something similar in poetry, this time with the fourteenth-century Indian feminist and poet Lalleshwari. This resulted in his colorful woodcuts that are layered and printed over and over again, so that colors are applied over each other. This creates new perspectives, tensions and forces for the audience.
